Wayne Ormond, Founder and Executive Chairman, Refund Group
Wayne grew up on his family’s cattle property in Far North Queensland and was schooled in neighbouring Innisfail
At the age of 21 Wayne left his home town and moved to Brisbane to begin a career in what he saw as his future at that time – property.
In four years with LJ Hooker Queensland Investment Homes, Wayne became General Manager responsible for both the Queensland and NSW sales teams. He then moved to Raine & Horne where for three years he controlled four divisions including Investment, Residential and Project Marketing to become a Group Managing Director with four franchises before the age of 30.
Wayne’s property experience led him to develop an aptitude for property financing and in 2001 he joined Suncorp Metway with the specific objective of honing his property funding expertise. He soon realised that he had found his business calling.
While becoming a very successful lender of home loan products and services and receiving a number of performance awards at Suncorp Metway, Wayne became concerned seeing his bank customers struggle under the pressure of high interest rates and increasing bank fees.
With his background in banking and property, Wayne realised there had to be a better way for borrowers, that he should be able to give something back to say ‘thank you’ to customers who trusted him with the biggest financial commitment most families make – their home loan.
That realisation became the genesis of his revolutionary business model for Refund with its unprecedented double-barrelled offer of refunding customers a share of its commissions and conducting its business through the company’s Franchisees.
